The Foundation

The Cray-Stiftung was founded in 1993 by the company Cray-Research GmbH. Located in Hanover, it is a foundation incorporated under private law. The foundation’s assets amount to approx. EUR 500,000. The Volkswagen Foundation assumed trusteeship of the independent Cray Foundation in 2010.

The purpose of the Cray Foundation is to promote the further education of engineers and scientists, especially in the field of microelectronics and micro-engineering. The foundation focuses its support activities on the Federal State of Lower Saxony.

Management Board

The Cray Foundation is managed by a board comprising two persons. According to the foundation statutes, the Management Board has to be chaired by the Secretary General of the Volkswagen Foundation. Currently the Management Board of the Cray Foundation comprises

  • Dr. Georg Schütte (Chairman of the Management Board) and
  • Inéz-Maria Wellner (Managing Director and Member of the Board).

Pursuit of the Foundation's purpose

Deutschlandstipendien

Since 2014 the Cray Foundation supports so called "Deutschlandstipendien" at the Universities of Braunschweig and Hannover. The Foundation places special emphasis that the stipends are allocated to talented students especially educational climbers in the fields of microelectronics and micro-engineering.

Further Funding Possibilities

Depending on the availability of proceeds, the Cray Foundation is also open for funding summer schools, workshops, or supporting the participation of student teams in international competitions within the fields of microelectronics and micro-engineering.

In 2014, for instance, the Cray Foundation enabled the participation of the Team "Nanoscooter" from the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, TU Braunschweig, at the BIOMOD Contest of the Wyss Institute at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA.
